Administering a PA Trust After Death
By Sean Quinlan, Esq. · Updated January 15, 2025

When the settlor of a revocable trust dies, the trust becomes irrevocable and the successor trustee takes over. The work is similar to probate — privately, without court supervision.
Notice to beneficiaries
Pennsylvania requires written notice to qualified beneficiaries under 20 Pa.C.S. § 7780.3 within 30 days of acceptance of trusteeship.
Inheritance tax
Trust assets pass through the REV-1500 just like probate assets. Same 9-month deadline, same 5% early-payment discount.
Accounting
Beneficiaries can request a formal trust accounting at any time. Many trustees use informal annual accountings to head off requests.
