PA Probate Timeline

By Sean Quinlan, Esq. · Updated January 15, 2025

Pennsylvania probate is a sequenced process with statutory deadlines. Even an uncontested estate rarely closes faster than 9 months.

Week 1–4

Locate the original will, file at the Register of Wills, take the oath, receive Letters Testamentary, secure assets, send notice to beneficiaries.

Month 2–3

Publish notice to creditors, build the inventory, file estimated inheritance tax payment to capture the 5% discount.

Month 4–9

Pay debts, file final REV-1500 by the 9-month deadline, request inheritance tax appraisement.

Month 10–18

Final accounting, beneficiary distributions, final closing.
