Estate Planning When You Move From PA

By Sean Quinlan, Esq. · Updated January 15, 2025

Leaving Pennsylvania doesn't fully sever PA tax exposure, but it does require new advance directives, POAs, and a will review for the destination state.

Domicile

Domicile changes when you intend to make a new state your permanent home AND act consistently — driver's license, voting, primary residence.

PA real estate

Continues to be subject to PA inheritance tax even after you become a Florida or Delaware resident. Plan with PA inheritance tax in mind.

New documents

Re-execute POA and healthcare directive in the new state's format. The will is generally portable but should be reviewed.
